It’s easy to tell when to replace window treatments. When the fad is over it’s time to change the curtains. But, even timeless window treatments wear out with time.
Here are the top signs it’s time to get new window treatments.
What Are The Signs You Need New Window Treatments?
You’ve probably never thought about it. Have you ever paid close attention to your windows and blinds? Did you know they age and can deteriorate like anything else in your home? Here’s what to look for.
They Don’t Meet Current Safety Standards
Has it been a while since you’ve had a baby in the house? Did you know window blinds are subject to safety standards?
The cords of window blinds pose a choking hazard for infants and toddlers. New safety regulations got adopted to help prevent tragedies. The newest standard, released in early 2018, requires blinds to be cordless. If not cordless, their cords must be no longer than 40% the height of the blinds themselves.
If you have children, or grandchildren in your home, this could be a safety concern for you. All manufacturers had to comply with the standard by the end of 2018.
They’re Starting to Discolor
Depending on the color of your window curtains this may be something you miss. Over time, curtains begin to fade or discolor. This is due to a variety of reasons.
Smoking in the home can cause yellowing of curtains. If your window gets a lot of direct sunlight, the color can fade. Children let loose with markers often draw on hanging fabrics.
During your spring cleaning, inspect your window treatments. If you notice some discoloration or damage consider replacing them. Replacements don’t have to be expensive. Keeping your window treatments new and fresh gives your home a more polished look.
Operating Them Is Difficult
A major culprit of this type of aging is vertical blinds. Have you noticed it’s getting harder and harder to open the blinds? Do you have to fight with them to get them up or climb on furniture to get them down?
It’s time to get them replaced. A broken operating mechanism inside the blinds housing can cause this. Rusting causes this. The track of your vertical blinds could have a crack in it.
These problems make your blinds annoying. More than that, they mean your blinds could fall off. This could injure a child, or a pet, or you. If they aren’t working get rid of them. It’s in everyone’s best interest.
